Snail is a common name for gastropods (or shellfish) terrestrial and freshwater shell. In alimentation, there are four varieties of snails eaten by the French: Helix aspersa (squirrel and large-gray) in western France on the Atlantic coast. Burgundy Snails are used with parsel butter . Helix Lucorum snail is imported from the Balkans or Turkey. Winkles are small marine mollusks. Snail eggs can be eaten. Pregnant women can eat snails during pregnancy. However, they must be thoroughly washed to remove any soil and avoid the risk of toxoplasmosis for pregnant women who are not immunized. It should be well cooked to avoid listeriosis. Snails are an excellent source of iron and minerals (calcium, phosphorus, magnesium and copper).
